Seeking Knowledge with Adab
April 22, 2026 / 5 min read
Knowledge without proper etiquette may increase information but decrease benefit.
The scholars of the past emphasized adab (proper etiquette) before knowledge itself. A student who lacks humility, respect, and sincerity may accumulate facts but miss the transformative purpose of learning.
Adab includes respect for teachers, patience in study, acting upon what is learned, and teaching others with gentleness.
Knowledge and action
Knowledge that does not lead to action becomes a proof against its possessor. The purpose of learning is not to impress others but to draw closer to Allah through understanding and implementation.
The truly knowledgeable are often recognized not by their speech but by their humility, their worship, and their careful avoidance of speaking without certainty.
